Heyo Tit Fit Fam!

Happy new year! I hope you are all as excited about 2017 as I am. A new year means a new start for many people. It’s an opportunity to have a clean slate and make positive changes. It’s actually hard not to get on the ‘new year, new you’ bandwagon.

I love seeing people set new resolutions and goals this time of year. Likely because I love seeing people really commit to their health. Though, setting the right goal or resolution is just as important as the commitment to change is… which lead me to this month’s ‘Ask the Trainer Question.’’

How do I create a health and fitness New Year’s resolution I will actually stick to?

This is such a great question. There’s usually so much momentum the beginning of January to eat right, go to the gym and get in shape, but come February much of that excitement has gone to shit. This happens to different people for different reasons, but one reason is often because an attainable resolution wasn’t set in the first place. So I’ve created my list of Do’s and Don’ts of New Year’s Resolutions so that you set yourself up for success.

Don’t make it too vague… resolutions like ‘lose weight’ or ‘eat healthier’ are great in theory, but are too broad to create positive and lasting results.

Do make it specific and measureable… Want to lose weight? Great! Decide on exactly how much weight you want to lose.

Don’t give it a year… trying to achieve your goal by 2018 is too far off in the future. You’re bound to lose focus and feel like attaining the goal is a year away… literally.

Do set short term goals… break your resolution down into six week increments. I know… you may really want to lose 40 pounds but the end the year, which is awesome. But making shorter incremental goals will increase your chances of success. Try just focusing on losing six pounds in six weeks and see how it goes!

Don’t do this alone… goals and resolutions are more easily achieved with a buddy. Rope in your BFF, husband, wife, fiance, mom or whoever that would be on board for a healthier year!

Do ask for help… setting and working towards a New Year’s resolution won’t always be easy. If you’re struggling, ask someone for help… whether it’s your workout buddy, or me, get support when you need it!

Here is my most IMPORTANT DO when creating a new year’s resolution…

DO MAKE THIS MORE THAN A RESOLUTION… make it a lifestyle change. Many people eat well and work out intensely for a while and then go back to their old habits. Once you achieve one goal, it’s time to set another. Making small and incremental changes over time will help all these great healthy habits stick!

I know you’ve got this! With a some effort and the right resolution, you can make 2017 an amazing year. If you’re still having trouble creating 2017 new year’s resolution, contact me here… I am happy to help!
